Professional membership of the Institute of British Organ Building

The IBO is the largest pipe organ building industry association in Great Britain; in 2021 it gained charitable status. Its principal aim is to support pipe organ builders and to further the craft of organ building - so becoming a member of the IBO makes sense for anyone involved in any way with pipe organ building.

The IBO welcomes applications from all businesses (including sole traders) who are involved in all aspects of the pipe organ building industry from tuning to new organ manufacture and also those who specialise in services such as pipe decoration, leatherwork, voicing etc. Businesses who supply organ builders with products ranging from organ building components, pipes, electrical systems, leather etc are also welcomed as professional (Trade Supplier) members.

Benefits of membership include :

  • Inclusion in the Register of Accredited Members – if accepted as an Accredited Business Member – which is referred to by decision-makers at Diocesan and parish level, in addition to being regularly updated online at our website for wider public access
  • Opportunity to attend training workshops and lectures on the many diverse aspects of the craft
  • Invitations to events at various locations throughout the UK. These include visits to recently completed projects, presentations and the chance to catch up socially with friends and colleagues throughout the country
  • Receipt of regular publications including quarterly Newsletters and our highly acclaimed annual Organ Building
  • Right to vote on policy matters at General Meetings plus the chance to help the work of the Institute via a variety of sub-committees or even as a Trustee (subject to election at the AGM)
  • Industry representation when in discussions with other bodies such as the GMB trades union – when negotiating Industry Terms & Conditions – and government departments such as the Department for Education and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
  • Mediation service – rarely needed but valuable nonetheless (Business Members only)

Within our Professional level of membership we have a number of specific categories and these are explained here.
